So far, I've read 2 novels by Julian Barnes... one is Metroland (his first book) and other is Flaubert's Parrot. Metroland a coming of age story about Christopher Lloyd and his friend Toni set in London and Paris. I'd recommend it to anyone who's into British literature; the writing is crisp and witty despite a weak storyline. The book was also made into a movie starring Christian Bale and Emily Watson. I've seen the movie too, and to be honest, it was pathetic. Bad acting, terrible screenplay, and horrendous direction, there's nothing good about the film except for the music, which is composed by Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits). If you've read the book already, just make sure you steer clear of the movie because it's guaranteed to ruin your experience.
As of now, I'm reading his second novel called Before She Met Me. It's about a 40-something English academic who falls in love with a younger woman. I can't say if everyone will like it, because, like his other novels, it's full of British humor, which authors like Kinglsey Amis, Zadie Smith and P.G Wodehouse use. If you aren't used to British humor, you should start with P.G Wodehouse and then move on to modern authors like Zadie Smith and Barnes. They've written some of the funniest books around, some of which even surpass classics like Catcher in the Rye and Catch 22.
Coming to the Booker-winning novel The Sense of an Ending,I haven't read it yet. But I'll be buying it the moment I finish reading Before She Met Me. Below is a link to my Goodreads profile. I'll be reviewing more books on my profile once I get time.
